MUSIC VIDEO (PT 2)

The last 30 years has brought some very iconic music videos. For example do you remember the first time you saw 'Thriller'- MICHAEL JACKSON (the full 15 version of it)? Or what about 'Bohemian Rhapsody'-QUEEN? Both those videos were made 70s/80s.

So what about the 90's? Well 1990 saw MADONNA's 'Vogue' video released. Im sure that more than a few of you have seen that video. There were plenty of fans at the time trying to copy the dance routine & 'strike a pose'. (However, MADONNA is not the first artist to incorparate dance into her videos. Of course, there is MICHAEL JACKSON. Again, some fans would try & copy the dance routines. Dance in music videos are still around today. Artists such as Lady gaga, Beyonce, One Direction etc all have dance in there videos).

In 1998 JAMIROQUAI released the music video 'Deeper Underground' which was taken from the film GODZILLA. In the music video there were a few clips taken from the film. Again this still happens today where a song from the soundtrack of a film has clips in the music video.

The 00's we had an iconic music video from RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS. What was it? Can you remember? The one where the band are in a video game. It was 'Californication'. I know there are a few others as well.

Today we have artists such as Lady Gaga, Beyonce etc making some iconic videos for the future. Pushing the boundaries.

What will the future of music videos be? (We've had the first 3D music video. Who was it? It was not Bjork, Aphex Twin, Kanye West. Can you think who? It was in fact MISSY ELLIOT, for her song Ching-a-ling). So who knows what the future will hold. We'll just have to wait & see.

FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK: JELLY CLEAVER

Hi! Everyone, this week's FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK is the very talented  singer-songwriter, musician  & producer JELLY CLEAVER JELLY CLEAVER Please introduce yourself I’m a singer-songwriter, jazz guitarist and producer. I’m also an activist and this really influences my music and the lyrics I write. I love lots of different genres so have quite an eclectic style and like to throw myself into different music scenes. I’m really into the jazz scene and the punk/DIY scene in London at the moment.   How did you get into music? I started playing guitar as soon as I could hold one pretty much because my dad was a guitar teacher, and I’ve always had a really deep connection to music. I’ve tried lots of different aspects of music out though, from leading an African singing and drumming ensemble to starting a rock band. I just love music in all its forms.   What instruments do you play? Guitar’s my first instrument but when I’m reco...

LESS IS MORE

When mixing you need to create space. It's so easy to keep adding different instruments when recording. However, when it comes to mixing you'll probably end up with 2 or more instruments fighting for the same frequency. So what do you do? Well, Firstly it depends on the instruments. Sometimes you may have to be harsh & think: "Do i really need these 2 parts or can i mute one (or even delete)?" This is what i normally do. Now maybe you're thinking: "What about using EQ?" Or "Why not use panning?" Yes i could use these tools. However is this additional sound going to add anything to the mix? Is this part necessary? If not, then im afraid the part either gets muted or deleted. A few days ago i was recording some vocals, for a middle 8 (on a new song). Let's just say i got a bit carried away & ended up recording a few harmony parts too many. I can tell you now that some of those harmony parts will probably be muted. (Why were thos...
