As some of you may or may not know I'm a fan of Cubase. Well, STEINBERG Rea back with their latest version of Cubase: CUBASE 11. Here are some of the new features: SAMPLER TRACK (Version 2) 'SQUASHER' PLUGIN  (Multiband Effect) FREQUENCY 2 (updated version of their EQ plugin) 'MULTIBAND IMAGER' PLUGIN  SIMPLER STEMS (A lot easier & less time consuming) SPECTRALAYERS ONE (A smaller version) SUPERVISION (Multimeter Audio Analyzer) etc I like the idea of the 'Simpler Stems' feature. That could be useful tool. I think SpectraLayers One is a nice addition to Cubase. Will I upgrade?  In 2009 NATIVE INSTRUMENTS released their first ever MASCHINE. Over the years there has been a few updates to MASCHINE. Now in 2020, NATIVE INSTRUMENTS are back with their latest version of MASCHINE (known as MASCHINE PLUS+) MASCHINE PLUS+ is now Standalone (which means you don't need it connected to your computer).  Other features included: 2 Colour Screens 16 Pads 8 encoders 64 GB SD card (included) 32 GB internal flash storage (factory content & OS) WI-FI enabled  8GB sounds Around 8 instruments  Effects Expansions I think the fact that this is now standalone may appeal to more musicians etc. However, MASCHINE PLUS+ does not come cheap. After RADIOHEADS album 'OK COMPUTER', Thom Yorke wanted to take influence from ambient, electronic & jazz music etc. The album was made using modular synthesisers, brass, strings etc.  I remember when this album was released there were no singles or music videos, not many interviews or photoshoots with the band. RADIOHEAD were one of the first major acts to use the internet as a promotional tool. You could stream the album & watch short animated films etc.  It went to No 1 in the UK & USA. Jazz pianist 'RICK SIMPSON' has revisited RADIOHEAD'S 'KID A' album as a jazz album. It doesn't just feature piano. In around 2016 NATIVE INSTRUMENTS released GUITAR RIG 5. I sometimes do use Guitar rig 5. To be honest it's not bad. The interface seems simple to use etc. NATIVE INSTRUMENTS have now announced GUITAR RIG 6.  The first thing I noticed when seeing this, is the interface. It seems to looker a lot more sharper & a lot better. You can now resize the interface easier.  Yes, BEHRINGER are teasing another synth. This time looks like a clone of the PPG WAVE. At the moment of writing this only a photo of a prototype is available (No audio demos or videos) The synth looks like it will be called: BEHRINGER BBG WAVE. In 1980 ROLAND introduced the TR-808 Drum Machine to the world. When it was first released it wasn't a commercial success. Just as the 808 was to be discontinued the HIP-HOP & DANCE scene started to use the Drum Machine a lot more.  The dance band 808 STATE took their name from the drums machine.  These days an 'Original' TR-808 can cost up to a few thousand pounds. ROLAND also bought out an updated version of the 808 called TR-08.  There are also imitation/ clones that other manufacturers have made & also 808 sample libraries. I think this is a classic drum machine & will continue to be in the future. Technology is great when it works. There are times when it doesn't work as it should do. Music software & hardware are no different. A few months ago I mentioned about a guitar that was valued at around £400,000 that was once owned by JOHN LENNON & GEORGE HARRISON  (THE BEATLES). However, recently a guitar that PRINCE once owned ('Blue Angel Cloud 2') sold at auction for over £500,000.  Is this the most expensive guitar ever sold? No. Even though DAVID GILMOUR'S 'Black Strat' sold for $3.8 million last year its still not the most expensive guitar. So what is the most expensive guitar ever sold? It's ' The Martin 1959 Martin D-18E'. This guitar was used by KURT COBAIN for NIRVANA'S MTV UNPLUGGED in 1993. This guitar sold for $6,010,000. WOW! That is expensive. If you are looking to seriously splash the cash then these speakers might be for you.  Warning: These are NOT cheap speakers  I'll start with the cheapest first FINAL AUDIO OPUS  204 (Around $450,000)- 800kg a speaker CAT MBX POWERED SPEAKERS (Around $500,000)- These are not the cheapest California Audio Technology speakers (Some have known to cost up to $16m). The speakers are up to 12ft. WOW! They are tall. Good ole BEHRINGER are back again teasing another new product:  JAM. Recently Behringer/ Music Tribe set a facebook group for Djing & production. This where DJs & producers etc can meet & talk to product designers.  A photo in the group has appeared of what could be the 'JAM'. The photo looks (to me) a bit like an Akai MPC. Basically like a Groovebox. It consists of: 16 pads Screen Start, stop, play buttons etc Sequencer etc It does look quite good. Is this a product we will see in the future? Well, the past few months I suppose have been kinda strange. In the UK we are still in kinda lockdown.  This song kinda reflects the situation we are in. If you don't have some kind of controller music production can involve a lot of mouse clicking. I know theses days there are quite a few midi controllers available which can do various things. What makes the MP MIDI CONTROLLER different then? Well, this controller allows you to control your plugins, virtual instruments etc really without the need to map the controls to each individual plugin. It also comes with a 21.5" IPS screen. Around the edge of the controller are 32 endless rotary controllers. The software runs on Mac & pc in VST 3 and AU formats. Looking at it I kinda like this idea. I think this could be a very useful controller.At the time of writing this there is no price. If you use a MAC for music production & have a lot of plugins. Then you might want to consider the software: AUDIOGRIDDER.  AUDIOGRIDDER allows you to offload DSP processing power to another computer via a network. Its VST 3 & AU format (64 bit). Also you will need a Mac OS 10.14 or higher. At the moment the only tested DAWs are CUBASE 10 PRO, Logic Pro X & REAPER. The good news is is that AUDIOGRIDDER is free. KOVALUU are a Finnish Developer. They have created an app called  'BEATS & LOOPS'. I know what you maybe thinking, its another app with beats & loops. How is this different from other 'Beats & Loops' apps around? Well, this app uses your smartphones proximity sensor so you can hover your foot & imitate how you would stomp on a pedal (you can start- stop songs, trigger drum loop, live looping etc) This sounds good but personally I think you would have to be very careful doing this. You would'nt want to by accident stand on your phone. I remember saying to myself at the start of the year that I've got enough music plugins, I don't need anymore. I will not buy anymore. Every year I seem to say the same thing 😂😂 Well, that lasted a few weeks. It was in March when a music software site had a sale. Looking at the prices I couldn't resist. I tried to justify why I needed them. My excuse is they will be useful plugins for mixing & mastering, lololol. What are the chances of me not buying any more plugins this year? It was a few years ago & I came across a live version of: 'Hamburger Lady'- THROBBING GRISTLE (on youtube). This was certainly something different. Probably one of the most creepiest songs I had ever heard.  I had heard of the band THROBBING GRISTLE before but never really heard any of their songs.  Nearly 20 years ago I knew some one who was a fan of THROBBING GRISTLE. At the time I liked industrial music & liked NINE INCH NAILS etc. I was told that industrial music was more than NINE INCH NAILS etc. It was in fact THROBBING GRISTLE that really were the first band to start Industrial Music. I think it was GENESIS P-ORRIDGE who came up with the term 'Industrial Music'.  Anyway, going back to the live video of 'Hamburger Lady' I had watched, I really admired the lead singer. I found more videos on youtube of THROBBING GRISTLE.  Again, I liked the lead singer because s/he was doing something different. Not really afraid what other people thought.  G

Nowadays there are quite a few DAWs for music production (eg, Cubase, Pro Tools , Logic Pro X etc).  A company that I have mentioned a few times on this blog has announced its is creating its first ever DAW.  Who am I talking about?  Drum Roll...  BEHRINGER. Thats right good ole BEHRINGER have announced they will be creating their own 'Music Tribe' DAW. They have also stated that it would be free.  Now this could be interesting. A guitar once owned by The Beatles, JOHN LENNON & GEORGE HARRISON has been valued around £400,000. The guitar I'm talking about is the '1960s BARTELL FRETLESS. The guitar was recently valued on the ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, UK. Its current owner is session musician Ray who was asked to play guitar by GEORGE HARRISON & ended up giving Ray the guitar. This guitar is a very rare fretless.  The owner still plays the guitar. I think this a great piece of memorabilia for nay music fan. When we listen to music sometimes we find ourselves tapping our fingers along, whatever surface. (Yes, I do this times, lol) Introducing 'MUSIC FINGERS'. MUSIC FINGERS is a wearable device shaped like a finger thimble. It allows you to play different instruments, sounds or loops on any surface using a trigger. The sounds, instruments or loops are available via an app. Its simple: Put on your music fingers Connect them via bluetooth to the app Select Instruments etc Play music whilst tapping along  You can create your own music etc. This could be a fun device. As of writing this the project is on kickstarter. Tinnitus is a sound as people describe as a buzzing,  ringing, clicking, hissing or roaring sound. Those that suffer from Tinnitus can hear it in one or both ears. RUPERT BROWN is a musician who suffers from Tinnitus. He created his own sound therapy. He created a sound library relaxing evocative sound & music. T- MINUS is an app that has a sound library with Tinnitus sounds & music to help sufferers. At the moment the app is only available on iOS & is free (an Android version is in the works). However you do need a Spotify premium  account (T-Minus should be offering a stand-alone subscription in the future). I think this a clever app & could well be worth trying if you do suffer from Tinnitus. Around 2000 the Sony playstation 1 was launched. It was a very popular games console worldwide. Whats it got to do with music? Well, recently THIAGO FERRI  aka TETHINHAS created the PEDALSTATION . What is it? Well, FERRI built 4 effects pedals in a Playstation 1 chassis. These days when we listen to music we normally see some form of display, either LED lights, flashing lights on a hi-fi, computer screen, phone etc. Some of these visuals can create electrical noise. As a mix & mastering engineer I do at some stage when mixing & mastering close my eyes so I can listen to the music (audio) better (I'm not focusing on the screen or any visuals). Researchers have tested,  if you listen to music with your eyes closed there is more brain activity. It seems when you're listening to music (audio) with visuals your brain doesn't have to work as hard. I found listening to music with no display enables me to hear the music (audio) more clearly (yes it might sound silly). If you think about out we listen to music with our ears not our eyes. It can create 8 bit retro game sounds. Can also be used for other genres of music as well. 27 Keys, Midi IN/OUT, Built in Speaker, 128 patch memory, 64 step sequencer etc KORG ARP 2600 FS- Yes, it's a recreation of the famous ARP 2600 synth, supervised by co-founder of ARP instruments David Friend. BEHRINGER are back (again) with another re-creation of a classic synth.  It's a clone of the 1970s OCTAVE CAT synth. The OCTAVE CAT synth was kinda a competitor to the ARP ODYSSEY (which BEHRINGER also have a clone of). BEHRINGER THE CAT synth, will be a desktop (no keyboard). It will also come with usb, midi in/ out & CV inputs & outputs. At the time of writing this no price has been confirmed. The past decade we have seen a few very successful artists. Here are some Artists that made a name for themselves in the 2010s: ROBYN- ‘Bodytalk’ album inspired some of  this decades artist eg LORDE, CHARLI XCX & CARLY RAE JEPSON. ROBYN’S best song of the decade was ‘Dancing on my own’  ADELE- I think ADELE is now a household name. In 2010 ADELE released ‘Rolling in the Deep’ (It took around 6 months to get to the Top 100 in the billboard charts. When the song did it stayed there for 7 weeks) Her album ‘21’ also topped the charts as did ‘25’. Both albums are Nos 1 & 2 for albums of the decade. ADELE won 6 Grammys in one night. ED SHEERAN- ‘Multiply’ & ‘Divide’ albums are both in the top 10 albums of the decade. Just behind ADELES ‘21’ & ‘25’. His most popular song was ‘Shape of You.
