Is this the year music died? Well, unfortunately this year we sadly lost quite a few celebrities. Amongst those were some very talented musicians. As some of you may or not know I'm a fan of Cubase. Ive used the software  for many years now. Last week Steinberg were back with their latest version of Cubase: Cubase 9. The good thing is is that Steinberg listen to their users to find out what they would like in the next version. Here are some of the new features: 'LOWER ZONE' VIEW -You can have the mix console, midi or audio editors incorporated into the project window. (The 'Lower Zone' is resizable) SAMPLER TRACK HISTORY FUNCTION- You can now undo & redo in the 'Mixconsole' FREQUENCY EQ- A brand new EQ with piano  roll Cubase 9 comes with features too I have to say i may probably upgrade to Cubase 9 next year. So far 2 of the new features that i mainly like is the: History Function' (Mixconsole) & new 'Frequency EQ'. Anybody tried Cubase 9? A few weeks ago someone posted in Facebook group about how to Bypass ALL plugins in Cubase 8.5. (As some of you may know i use Cubase 8.5 in the main studio). It's a lot quicker than turning off each individual plugin. Here's how to do this: CUBASE- Go to File  Key Commands  Mixer (Section) Bypass Inserts Type in box a key (e.g. B etc) Assign OK When you press that key all plugins should be bypassed on the mixer LOGIC PRO X- As far as i know at the moment you cannot just press one button/ key & turn all the plugins off simultaneously. Music gear company: ROLI are back with their latest creation called: 'Blocks'. Whats 'Blocks'? Well, Its like having a modular music studio. There are 3 Blocks to choose from ('Lightpad', Live Control' & 'Loop'). All 3 blocks can be connected to each other. LIGHTPAD-Small portable  device with 225 LEDS on Surface.Touch the surface to create music, beats etc. USB ports. LIVE CONTROL - At only 9.5 cm long this looks like a very portable little device. This 'Block' lets you change Octaves, play arpeggios & chords & sustain notes LOOP- Set your tempo, record your song and quantize your loops I will admit i have played Roli Searise keyboard. Honestly, I  didn't really enjoy playing it.  However, 'Blocks' does look more fun to use. Its portable.  To get  LIGHTPAD to work you will need the App: 'Noise' At the moment to purchase all 3 Blocks is around $516 (approx £420). Hmmmmm! Maybe its me but it does sound

As some of you may be aware i do like my synths (Hardware & Software).  Well, a new synth, sampler & sequencer has been announced by Synthstrom Audible called 'DELUGE'.  If you like  like grid box synths, grooveboxes etc then this could be for you. Heres a few features: 128 pads Synthesizer Keyboard Mode Effects (Delay, Reverb etc) Sampler Sequencer etc I think the main competitor for the 'Deluge' is  the Novation Circuit. The 'Deluge' probably offers more but its also more money (at around £640) compared to 'Circuit' (around £250). I have to say I'm not a huge grid based synth fan. However, they normally are quite portable etc. Yes, i would try it just to see what its like. I have finally upgraded SOLAR STUDIOS. Recently, i had to face facts that the computer was over 5 years old & technology has moved on somewhat. In fact technology moves so quick that these days its hard to keep up to date.The computer is a lot more faster, more ram etc. I now have 2 monitors instead of 1. It really helps especially when using Cubase. The past couple of days I've seen posts on social media regarding the Arturia Drum Brute. Yes its another drum machine. Arturia state its 100% Analog. The drum sounds are like the 808/ 909 etc. Here are some of the Arturia Drum Brute features: 17 Analog & percussion sounds 64 Step Sequencer Portable 24 Parameters (Change the pitch, decay, level etc) Steiner Parker Filter (Cutoff and resonance) Looper It looks good, but honestly i think it would be kinda competing with the Roland TR-08. Also they are similar price. There are a few 808/ 909 clones around these days. Is there room for another one? Hmmmmmm! Im not sure. Maybe i would like a drum machine to have a few more sounds not just 808/ 909. A few months ago i wrote a post about Behringer releasing a synth: DEEPMIND 12. Well now, Behringer have added a augmented reality interface to the synth. I think this is the first time ever that any company has done this to a synth. Imagine being able to control a number of elements (e.g. Oscillators & envelopes etc) with a 3D world around you. To get this 3D effect you need a HoloLens.  At the time of writing this the HoloLens is available to Powerusers, enterprise, developers etc. (The cost is $3000). The Deepmind 12 has not yet been released. Its due by the end of 2016. That will cost around $999. I have to say i really do like the idea of this. Looking at the video at Synthfest UK, it looks very fun to play & could be great for live shows. Yes, it would be great to try the 3D effect. However, i don't think i would use the HoloLens in the studio much. Like i said before to me its probably more for live shows. Its still a great idea. I think Behringer have stepped up

'Bohemian Rhapsody'- QUEEN is over 40 years old (Wow, Can you believe that?) QUEEN, GOOGLE  & ENOSIS VR have teamed up to create 'THE BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY EXPERIENCE'. It is a 3D, 360 degree video, with spatial sound & interactive elements. It sounds very interesting to me. However, to experience this you will need something like Google cardboard etc. The video is available on: ios and android (apps) Anybody seen this video yet? What are your thoughts? As some of you may or may not know i am a Cubase user. I have been using Cubase for over 10 years now. Well, Steinberg have released Cubasis 2. I remember seeing the first version of Cubasis & thinking i may buy it for the iPad. Now Steinberg have released a new version of it i may seriously consider getting it. There is a Cubasis 2 LE version as well. (If you already own Cubasis you should be able to upgrade to version 2 for free). I have to say i am interested in Version 2. It features: Synths Sampler Mixer Time Stretching Automation Export to Cubase Audio mix down etc Is Cubasis 2 worth buying as a sketchpad for a songwriter? Have you used Cubasis?  Friday 9th September, ROLAND had a online festival. They announced around 30 new products. Here's a few they announced: DJ 808- Roland have collaborated with DJ pro SERATO to join an 808 drum machine with a DJ Controller. The drum machine contains sounds from the 808, 606, 909 & 707. Also an onboard sequencer & 2 USB ports to connect other Aira gear smoothly. This does look quite impressive. I do think it will give DJ's more freedom to create different mixes etc.  SYSTEM 8- This another one of Roland's Plug-out synths. It comes with Jupiter 8 & Juno 106 (due to be released in 2017) plugouts. 49 full size keys, effects, usb, vocoder, arp & step sequencer etc. This does look like a very powerful synth, that i would like to try sometime. On 9th September 2016 Roland will be hosting a 24 hour online music festival. There will be video streaming from VIP Events in 8 major cities around the world (including: Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles, Berlin, Brussels, Toronto, New York etc) Recently Roland kinda teased us with the announcement of a celebration of their classic drum machine TR-909 (33 years). This event looks like Roland will announce more than maybe a new version of the TR-909. Up to 30 new products could be announced including: synths, amps, drums, piano/ keyboard etc. Will they Roland re-create the TR-909 like they did with the TR-808? Will they add more synths to their boutique range? Or will it be a completely new synth? Another version of the V-Piano or a completely new piano? We'll have to wait & see. Sennheiser is well known for making headphones etc. Have Sennheiser created the most expensive pair of headphones in the world? Sennheiser Orpheus 2, these headphones come with a Marble motorised basestation with tubes. It certainly looks impressive & had some very good reviews. However, I'm not sure about the price. If you would like to purchase these they are sold around $50,000 (No that is not a typo). As far as i know these are NOT limited edition. Would you want them to be for that price? If you are a musician you know how important your ears are. Performing at live concerts etc can be very loud. The last thing anybody wants is to damage their hearing by being exposed to deafening music. The Musicians' Hearing Health scheme will allow musicians to affordable hearing assessments & bespoke hearing protection.  If you interested you will have to pay around £40 (£30 for Musician Union members). In 2014 i wrote a blog post regarding how Jack White a his record label 'Third Man Records' brought out a Vinyl album that displayed a hologram as the record played. Jack White & 'Third Man Records' made history last month as part of the labels Seventh Anniversary by being the first to play a vinyl record in space. It took a few years of planning to achieve this. A custom 'Space Proof' turnable was launched, which was attached to a high-altitude balloon (named: ICARUS CRAFT). The record played was: 'A Glorious Dawn'- CARL SAGAN. It played for around 1 Hour & 20 Mins whilst ascending. The ICARUS CRAFT reached a peak altitude of around: 94,413 feet. The flight time was around: 1:21:20 before the balloon burst & fell back down to earth. I have to say i admire Jack White & his team because they are not afraid to push boundaries. Last week due to the hot weather my computer was overheating. On one of the days the computer kept restarting & crashed completely. I finally managed to shut the whole system off. When i turned the computer back on again i was faced with the Bios Screen. Aaaggggghhhhhh.lol. (Everything you don't need when trying to work). I was able to restore the computer back to how it was before the chaos. I honestly thought i had backed up the latest version of cubase that i had. However, when i looked. I hadn't. It was bye bye Cubase 8. Cubase is now on 8.5. The problem i was facing now to upgrade was downloading Cubase 8.5. Why? The file is nearly 10GB. I live in a rural area. Our broadband is quite slow. We cannot get fibre optic broadband at all (Ive looked at all options & service providers). Luckily i contacted Steinberg & they agreed to send me some discs. It looks like I'm finally upgrading to Cubase 8.5. I'm kinda looking forward to it with some new features

As some of you may or not be aware i am a synth fan. I love trying new synths out when i can. Behringer recently announced a new analogue synth. All that has been revealed so far is a teaser video & the fact it is analogue. I think this is the first synth Behringer have ever made & to be honest does look quite interesting. I think the price is suppose to be affordable for an analog synth. I would be interested in trying this synth. No price or whether its monophonic or polyphonic has been revealed yet. As some of you may or may not know I'm a fan of synths (Hardware & soft synths). This particular synth has caught my eye. Why? The price is certainly not cheap. The synth is: THE HARTMANN 20 (Limited Edition).  Its created & designed by Alex Hartmann. Hartmann has helped to create other synths including: Access Virus, Waldorf Wave, Moog Voyager XL & Studio Sledge. THE HARTMANN 20 have an aluminium body & a black fatal seabed. Also will be built around Studiologic's Sledge engine. Only 40 of these synths will be made (20 Black & 20 Silver finished models) And now for the price, around €20,000. Last week saw Summer Namm 2016 take place. Here are a few pieces of gear that was announced: GIG GEAR THERMO GLOVES & ONYX- When working in Live Events, Theater etc there are times when you could be working in a very cold environment. As well as protecting music equipment your hands could be protected too. These gloves are designed for: Production Crew  , Roadies , DJ's & musicians etc. They also work with touchscreen etc. I think this is a very good idea SE ELECTRONICS RF PRO- I have to admit i am a fan of SE Electronics & have been a few years now. Well, Summer is finally here and this week starts 'Summer Namm 2016'. Yes thats right more music gear.  Here are a few pieces of gear that could be announced: EVOLUTION GUITARS- For guitar players this is the world's first modular guitar. This means that you can change the faceplate of the guitar, changing the style and tone etc (e.g. Metal, Jazz , rock etc). You can also work with Evolution & customise your own personalised faceplate. At the moment i don't think any price has been confirmed. The faceplates i think will be about half the cost of the guitar (There may be bundle & package deals etc). Personally this looks interesting, having one guitar & being able to change the faceplate. (Although i suppose it depends on price for the guitar & each faceplate). These days there are quite a few different digital formats (e.g. MP3, AAC, FLAC etc). More & more people are downloading/ streaming music. Meridan Audio have created a new format called: Master Quality Authenticated (MQA). This means that you could hear songs exactly how they were recorded (Hi-Res). Streaming service Tidal has already said that they have plans to offer MQA in 2016.Will other streaming services follow? We'll have to wait & see. What do you think? Last Thursday i remember checking my phone & the first thing that came up was the news that PRINCE had died. I was totally shocked. I could not believe what i was reading. Prince was a incredible talented musician/ artist. He played at least 27 instruments, singer, composer, lyricist, mix engineer, producer etc. An awesome guitar player.  He wrote some great songs. Here are some of my favourites: 'Nothing Compares 2 U'  'Purple Rain' 'When Doves Cry' 'Little Red Corvette' '1999' 'I Would Die for You' 'Kiss' 'Peach' 'The Most Beautiful Girl in the World' (my favourite song) Prince was also in films. Probably his most successful film was 'Purple Rain' This year we have now lost another legend: Prince.  We will always have his music, films etc to remember him by. As it was record store day at the weekend & that vinyl seems to be making more of a comeback, i thought i would take a look at record players. However, not the cheapest, no. Instead looking at the most expensive record players that money can buy. I'll start by looking at the Kronos turntable. Well it certainly looks very impressive and hopefully sound very impressive too. It does retail at around £30,000. However, that is not the most expensive turnable that i'm going to mention.  Lets look at the TechDas Air Force one. Its got air suspension & air bearing etc. Again looks very impressive & at around £75,000 i would hope it also sounds very impressive too. Still not the most expensive record player though, oh no.  Let me introduce you to the AV Design Haus Dereneville VPM 2010. Its got a touchscreen, the chassis made of Corian, the plate runs on ball bearings, combines digital & analogue techniques etc. Now, this looks a very luxury turntable & hopefu

What is SUPERBOOTH 16? Well, its another music exhibition, This one focuses on electronic music gear. (Originally SUPERBOOTH was a stand at Frankfurt Musikmesse). There will be over 100 exhibitors. It takes place at the Funkhaus (Berlin).  Unfortunately I'm not going this year. The past week or so I've seen the video a few times (on my timeline on Facebook) for: 'The Wintergartan Marble Machine' (Music box). It was built by Martin Molin, a Swedish musician. 'The Marble Machine' uses a hand crank & 2000 marbles to create the sounds (Drums, Bass & other sounds). I have to say it looks quite impressive. The past month or so i have been working (& still working) on 2 projects. One is an acoustic ep or album & the other is my next electronic album (The follow up album to: ' Midnight'  ).  At the start of the new year I finally got round to buying new strings for my acoustic guitar & playing it again. I have written a few new songs on the guitar. It has been a welcome break from writing songs on a keyboard/ piano, synth. I have been recording lots of ideas for both projects. Have you heard a music app called 'Fantom'? Its a sensory music app. It remixes music that is based on the users movement, heartbeat etc. I have tried this app & have to say its certainly different. A bit of a strange app.  Moving the phone around in different directions as well as using at a different time of day, using your phones camera. Last week Namm 2016 was back. New music gear from different companies were exhibited.  Here are some of my highlights: 1. YAMAHA MONTAGE- Good ole Yamaha are back with a new synth called: Montage.  My first reaction was "Is this synth going to replace the Motif Series"? I think it could well do. Combines AWM2 & FM-X synthesis tone generators  Roots from DX7 Superknob Control Envelope Follower Touchscreen Aftertouch  Audio interface Twice the power of the Motif Could be good for Live/ stage as well as studio 'Montage' is due to be released May 2016 Yes, i would like to try this synth. It does better than the Motif range.  2. KORG MINILOGUE- Korg are back with another 37 key synth. I kinda liked the Microkorg. The Minilogue doesn't have a vocoder (as i know of). It was the vocoder & the fact that the Microkorg was a portable synth that i liked. Yamaha & Roland last year released mini synths. I find the Roland JD-XI a very powerf

Woke up this morning to the very sad news that David Bowie had died. I have to say i was shocked. A very talented & influential artist. Influenced a lot of people. What a legend Bowie is. A career that spanned 6 decades. Over the years he reinvented himself. He is an icon that will never be forgotten. As Christmas & New Year is over, it's that time of year again for music technology. What am I talking about? NAMM 2016. Yes it's back for another year, this month (January). What can we expect?
