THE SONG THAT GETS STUCK IN YOUR HEAD!

I'm sure most of you have woken up singing a song that is stuck in your head. You end up singing that one song ALL day. Sometimes not the one song. Oh no. Even two songs.

However, you don't really sing ALL the song just either a few lines of the verse or chorus. It's like that part of the song is stuck on repeat in your head. I find this a bit annoying.

Some songs get stuck in you head more times than others. So what songs have been stuck in my head before (more than once):

  • 'Spectrum'- FLORENCE & THE MACHINE (The first verse in particular)
  • 'Never let me go'- FLORENCE & THE MACHINE (Chorus)
  • 'Set fire to the rain'- ADELE (Chorus)
  • 'Flatline'-MKS (Mainly the Chorus)
  • 'Its up to you (Shining Through)-LAYO & BUSHWACKA
  • 'Bad Romance'- LADY GAGA
  • 'Marry The Night'- LADY GAGA
  • 'Wildest Dreams'- JESSIE WARE

Why do we get songs stuck in our head? One theory is Earworms (No not those earworms that crawl in to your ear). I mean the Earworms that get lodged into your head.

When mixing you need to create space. It's so easy to keep adding different instruments when recording. However, when it comes to mixing you'll probably end up with 2 or more instruments fighting for the same frequency. So what do you do? Well, Firstly it depends on the instruments. Sometimes you may have to be harsh & think: "Do i really need these 2 parts or can i mute one (or even delete)?" This is what i normally do. Now maybe you're thinking: "What about using EQ?" Or "Why not use panning?" Yes i could use these tools. However is this additional sound going to add anything to the mix? Is this part necessary? If not, then im afraid the part either gets muted or deleted. A few days ago i was recording some vocals, for a middle 8 (on a new song).
