AN AVATAR IDOL?

Today i'm going to talk about a female vocalist who has featured in over 100,000 songs worldwide, 900,000 fans on facebook, one of the biggest acts in Asia. Lady Gaga has revealed that this singer will open her 'ArtRave' tour. So who am i talking about? Any ideas?

I'm talking about Hatsune Miku. Hatsune is a virtual popstar, 3D hologram. The name comes from Hatsu (First), ne (Sound) & Miku (Future), which means "First voice of the Future". The voice itself is sampled from the actress 'Saki Fujita'. Yes that's right she does'nt really exist only in the virtual world. She has sold out 3D concerts in LA, Taipei, Singapore, Tokyo & Hong Kong. Miku has a human band playing real instruments. Some fans will travel miles to see one of her concerts. Others may dress like her.

Hatsune was created by Crypton Future Media & uses Yamaha's technology 'Vocaloid'. What is Vocaloid? Its a 'singing synthesizer. You input the text. You can get male & female singers.

I have to admit when i first heard of Hatsune Miku i could'nt believe how popular she was. I mean we are talking a virtual singer here. Maybe its just me. I don't know. Its just there are so many talented singers that don't get the recognition they deserve.

What do you think? Are virtual pop idols a good thing or a bad thing?

Until next time

FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK: JELLY CLEAVER

Hi! Everyone, this week's FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK is the very talented  singer-songwriter, musician  & producer JELLY CLEAVER JELLY CLEAVER Please introduce yourself I’m a singer-songwriter, jazz guitarist and producer. I’m also an activist and this really influences my music and the lyrics I write. I love lots of different genres so have quite an eclectic style and like to throw myself into different music scenes. I’m really into the jazz scene and the punk/DIY scene in London at the moment.   How did you get into music? I started playing guitar as soon as I could hold one pretty much because my dad was a guitar teacher, and I’ve always had a really deep connection to music. I’ve tried lots of different aspects of music out though, from leading an African singing and drumming ensemble to starting a rock band. I just love music in all its forms.   What instruments do you play? Guitar’s my first instrument but when I’m reco...

LESS IS MORE

When mixing you need to create space. It's so easy to keep adding different instruments when recording. However, when it comes to mixing you'll probably end up with 2 or more instruments fighting for the same frequency. So what do you do? Well, Firstly it depends on the instruments. Sometimes you may have to be harsh & think: "Do i really need these 2 parts or can i mute one (or even delete)?" This is what i normally do. Now maybe you're thinking: "What about using EQ?" Or "Why not use panning?" Yes i could use these tools. However is this additional sound going to add anything to the mix? Is this part necessary? If not, then im afraid the part either gets muted or deleted. A few days ago i was recording some vocals, for a middle 8 (on a new song). Let's just say i got a bit carried away & ended up recording a few harmony parts too many. I can tell you now that some of those harmony parts will probably be muted. (Why were thos...
