NAMM (WINTER) SYNTHS 2016!

Last week Namm 2016 was back. New music gear from different companies were exhibited.

Here are some of my highlights:

1. YAMAHA MONTAGE- Good ole Yamaha are back with a new synth called: Montage.  My first reaction was "Is this synth going to replace the Motif Series"? I think it could well do.

  • Combines AWM2 & FM-X synthesis tone generators
  • Roots from DX7
  • Superknob Control
  • Envelope Follower
  • Touchscreen
  • Aftertouch
  • Audio interface
  • Twice the power of the Motif
  • Could be good for Live/ stage as well as studio
'Montage' is due to be released May 2016

Yes, i would like to try this synth. It does better than the Motif range.

2. KORG MINILOGUE- Korg are back with another 37 key synth. I kinda liked the Microkorg. The Minilogue doesn't have a vocoder (as i know of). It was the vocoder & the fact that the Microkorg was a portable synth that i liked. Yamaha & Roland last year released mini synths. I find the Roland JD-XI a very powerful mini synth. It has some great sounds. Honestly, I'm not sure about the Minilogue. I may try the synth sometime.

  • Analog synth
  • Sequencer
Will this synth be as popular as the Microkorg? Hmmmm! Maybe.

3. DAVE SMITH INSTRUMENTS OB-6 - Two synth legends Dave Smith & Tom Oberheim have collaborated on this analogue synth. This looks a good synth

  • SEM Tone
  • 49 Semi-weighted keys
  • 6- Voice synth
Yes  would like to try this synth. I think this synth could do quite well.

4. ARTURIA MATRIXBRUTE- I'll be honest I've never really been a fan of Arturia. Ive demoed some of their products & not been too impressed. However, looking at their new synth 'Matrixbrute', could that change? It certainly looks powerful.

  • Analogue synth
  • Ladder filter
  • Sequencer
  • Matrix
Yes, i would like to try this synth. Will i finally become a Arturia fan?  We'll have to wait & see.

5. ZOOM ARQ- Whats this? It looks like a spaceship, with led lights. It looks kinda interesting & impressive. So what exactly is it?

  • Drums Machine
  • Sequencer Synth
  • Looper
  • Midi Controller
  • Bluetooth (wireless) ring controller
This would probably look good on stage. Yes, i would like to try this too.

Ive only mentioned a few products from Namm.  There were many more including: Guitars, Drums etc.

Roll on Summer Namm 2016

Before that we have got Musikmesse 2016

Until next time

FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK: JELLY CLEAVER

Hi! Everyone, this week's FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK is the very talented  singer-songwriter, musician  & producer JELLY CLEAVER JELLY CLEAVER Please introduce yourself I’m a singer-songwriter, jazz guitarist and producer. I’m also an activist and this really influences my music and the lyrics I write. I love lots of different genres so have quite an eclectic style and like to throw myself into different music scenes. I’m really into the jazz scene and the punk/DIY scene in London at the moment.   How did you get into music? I started playing guitar as soon as I could hold one pretty much because my dad was a guitar teacher, and I’ve always had a really deep connection to music. I’ve tried lots of different aspects of music out though, from leading an African singing and drumming ensemble to starting a rock band. I just love music in all its forms.   What instruments do you play? Guitar’s my first instrument but when I’m reco...

LESS IS MORE

When mixing you need to create space. It's so easy to keep adding different instruments when recording. However, when it comes to mixing you'll probably end up with 2 or more instruments fighting for the same frequency. So what do you do? Well, Firstly it depends on the instruments. Sometimes you may have to be harsh & think: "Do i really need these 2 parts or can i mute one (or even delete)?" This is what i normally do. Now maybe you're thinking: "What about using EQ?" Or "Why not use panning?" Yes i could use these tools. However is this additional sound going to add anything to the mix? Is this part necessary? If not, then im afraid the part either gets muted or deleted. A few days ago i was recording some vocals, for a middle 8 (on a new song). Let's just say i got a bit carried away & ended up recording a few harmony parts too many. I can tell you now that some of those harmony parts will probably be muted. (Why were thos...
