UAD SPARK?

Universal Audio have announced: 'SPARK'. So what is SPARK? Well, it's a platform that allows you to run their plugins natively without the Universal Audios hardware via subscription. At the time of writing this not all their plugins are available on the 'Spark' platform. (ONLY available on MAC for now. Windows is due later 2022)

Here is a list of the plugins (available now):

  • TELETRONIX LA2A COLLECTION
  • API 2500 BUS COMPRESSOR
  • UA 1176 COLLECTION
  • PURE PLATE REVERB
  • GALAXY TAPE ECHO
  • LEXICON 224 DIGITAL REVERB
  • API VISION CHANNEL STRIP PLUS
  • NEVE 1073 PREAMP & EQ
  • STUDER A800 TAPE MACHINE
  • OPAL SYNTHESIZER (Exclusive to SPARK)
  • MOOG MINIMOOG
  • WATERFALL B3
If you own any of the above plugins you should get them for free on UA SPARK via UA CONNECT. (You will need an ILOK account)

The subscription is around $20 (plus taxes outside the US).

Im assuming that more plugins will be added soon. At the moment there don't seem to be many for around $20 a month. There is a 14 day free trial. If you have purchased VOLT you should get 1 month free trial.

Hmmm! I'll be honest I like that idea of having the instruments native, i'm not really sure about it being a subscription service. Maybe if there was a choice between subscription & buying the plugins outright natively, that would be better. I do own & use some UAD plugins for mixing.

Until next time

FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK: JELLY CLEAVER

Hi! Everyone, this week's FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK is the very talented  singer-songwriter, musician  & producer JELLY CLEAVER JELLY CLEAVER Please introduce yourself I’m a singer-songwriter, jazz guitarist and producer. I’m also an activist and this really influences my music and the lyrics I write. I love lots of different genres so have quite an eclectic style and like to throw myself into different music scenes. I’m really into the jazz scene and the punk/DIY scene in London at the moment.   How did you get into music? I started playing guitar as soon as I could hold one pretty much because my dad was a guitar teacher, and I’ve always had a really deep connection to music. I’ve tried lots of different aspects of music out though, from leading an African singing and drumming ensemble to starting a rock band. I just love music in all its forms.   What instruments do you play? Guitar’s my first instrument but when I’m reco...

LESS IS MORE

When mixing you need to create space. It's so easy to keep adding different instruments when recording. However, when it comes to mixing you'll probably end up with 2 or more instruments fighting for the same frequency. So what do you do? Well, Firstly it depends on the instruments. Sometimes you may have to be harsh & think: "Do i really need these 2 parts or can i mute one (or even delete)?" This is what i normally do. Now maybe you're thinking: "What about using EQ?" Or "Why not use panning?" Yes i could use these tools. However is this additional sound going to add anything to the mix? Is this part necessary? If not, then im afraid the part either gets muted or deleted. A few days ago i was recording some vocals, for a middle 8 (on a new song). Let's just say i got a bit carried away & ended up recording a few harmony parts too many. I can tell you now that some of those harmony parts will probably be muted. (Why were thos...
