As a songwriter, the intro needs to grab the listeners attention. However, you don't always need an intro e.g:
'Brothers in Arms'-DIRE STRAITS
'Devotion 2000'-D*NOTE
'Gravity of Love'- ENIGMA
Until next time
- 'Hey Jude'-THE BEATLES
- 'Royals'-LORDE
Both those songs start with vocals. A solo vocal can be a very powerful instrument as'A an intro
Other songs can start with the chord sequence from the Chorus. e.g:
- 'Tonight'-LAW (When i wrote this song i came up with the chorus chord sequence first. I think that chord sequence was always going to be the intro as well. Hear the song in the video below)
- 'All About That Bass'- MEGHAN TRAINOR
- 'Build me up Buttercup'-THE FOUNDATIONS
- 'Dancing Queen'-ABBA
- 'Get The Party Started'-PINK
Also a song can start with a guitar intro e.g:
- 'Day Tripper'- THE BEATLES
- 'Enter Sandman'- METALLICA
- 'Some on the Water'- DEEP PURPLE
- 'Layla'- ERIC CLAPTON
Their are quite a few songs that have a really good intro.
What are your favourite songs intros?
Here's a few of mine:
